I'm An Uncle. ****UPDATED WITH PIC****

That's right, Briley Ann Sloat was born last night at around 6:30 PM, to my brother Brad and his wife Nicole. She was 7.3 pounds big, and that was being 4 weeks early. She is a ginger kid, and skin so clear you can see her insides like a glowfish, so it was fitting that she was born on St. Patty's Day.

I don't have any pictures yet I just got a picture, and you can confirm for yourself  that she is the most beautiful baby girl in the entire world.

Now the tough part.

I haven't said much, because I really don't like all the fuss that goes into announcing this kind of thing on your blog. But here's the deal. Briley was born with a tumor. They've known about it for a long time. Fortunately, this tumor is benign. It's also not on her back like they thought it was, so there has been no infusion with the spine. It's about the size of a softball though, and it's on her little leg.

However, they have to take this tumor off little Briley today, and it will require a surgery. This means that at one day old, my baby niece is going to go under the knife.

I know some of you believe in prayer. I know some of you don't. I know some of you believe in well wishing. I know others don't.

All I ask is that whatever you do to pass along some good to others, do it for my baby niece today. Prayers, thoughts, wishes, right down to a certain way you tie your shoes or a lucky pair of underwear that you put on. Send it all her way. If you want to call up your church folk and put her on a prayer list, that's fine. If you think that saying her name while looking at a rainbow coming out of horseshoe is the trick, then do it up. I'm not picky, and I respect how you do things.

Also, any comments that are left today will go in a card to the new family, so in a way, my blog family gets to say hi to my real family, if that's something you want to do.

The surgery starts at 11. That's where I am today, but I have my phone and I will get your comments and your well wishes, and for that, I thank you.

Thanks again to all those who heaped congrats on me yesterday via Twitter and Facebook! I love you all, and have a great day!

  2. Sweet Briley,

You've been born into a wonderful family...well I'm assuming because I only know you uncle. Still I know that he's pretty fabulous.

I'm praying for you. I'm praying the ten and twenty years from now, this day will just be a blip on the radar.

I'm praying that your family will be strong and rely on each other and God to get through this very tough day.

My oldest son had surgery right after he was born. It was really scary and I cried a lot. He is 24 now and expecting his own baby.

I am believing that this too shall pass and you will a happy, healthy, wonderful person that brings your mom and dad a life bursting with joy! And your uncle too, because I'm sure he thinks you are pretty fabulous!

  4. Sweet Baby Briley,

You have been born into a family that loves you dearly. Your Uncle Travis has told us all about you and how special you are. Apparently you're the most beautiful baby ever, and that's quite the achievement.

There's a lot of people praying for you, sending out good thoughts into the universe and thinking about you right now sweetie.

You'll get through this and there'll be tons of snuggles and love and hugs and kisses from that awesome family of yours.

    Prayers and love,

    Maggie (Mad Woman)

  5. Blessed Briley, Just born and already blessed that alone speaks volumes about the mighty plans God has laid out before you. He surrounded you with a strong wonderful family, an uncle who already knows you hung the sun moon and stars, a mommy and daddy who have parlayed their strength to you. I call forth healing angels to surround you this day, to guide the hands of the doctors and to surround your loving family in those moments when there is nothing to do but wait, when they want to do anything but that. I call forth strength from the throne of God to hold up your family and the ability to take a breath, when each one feels like a weight on their chest. Covered in the blood, protected by the promises of God and called to greatness so the devil better wear armor. You sweet baby girl are blessed and highly favored. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen

  6. I will definitely pray for you, Travis...but I'm thinking it actually may hurt rather than help.

  15. Hi Travis,

I don't usually comment, but I wanted to comment on this post. I was born with a benign tumor on my head, and went into surgery when I was just days old. To this day, I get a lot of "Well, that explains a lot" comments when I tell the story, but my real point is that your niece should be just fine, and I am wishing her good surgery juju.

  18. Congrats Travis. I will definitely send some good vibes and prayers that way. It is the hardest thing in the world to know that a baby is going through so much so early, I've been there, but I also know in my heart she will be okay. Take a deep breath and know it too Travis.

  19. As scary as this is (and make no mistake, it's about as scary as scary can get), the miracle of babies is that they heal very quickly. I'm sure sweet little Briley will be kicking Uncle Travis in the family jewels in no time!

Our son was born with a tumour as well, but we didn't know until he was 4 months old. And it was malignant. But he's okay, and just turned 12.

    Thank god for little miracles!!!
